TATA 1822/69 13.5 Meter Sleeper Bus Chassis - Full Specification

The first pair of Tata's 13.5-meter buses have hit the road in India. Built on Tata's 1822/69 13.5 meter chassis, the buses have been fabricated by Goa-based private bus body builders Shree Damodar Coach Crafts Pvt. Ltd.

Back in June 2020, after the transport industry was stalled by the Covid-19 induced lockdown, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways issued a notification to pave the way for larger buses and trucks.

As per the new notification, the length of buses with two axles can now be up to 13.5 meters, instead of the earlier mandate of 12 meters. For Tarmac and buses with three axles, the maximum permitted length was 15 meters. Essentially, this increased the seating capacity of buses by 15-20%.

Following this, the year 2021 saw OEMs Tata Motors Limited and Volvo launch their range of 13.5-meter bus chassis. Other OEMs like Ashok Leyland, Bharat Benz and Eicher are expected to follow suit.

But it's not until now that the first fully built 13.5 meter bi-axle buses have hit the road in India.
