Pune is scheduled to soon get indicators that will alert drivers of of electric vehicles whenever maximum boarding capacity is reached.

Overboadring in city buses is a big problem in India. While it gets uncomfortable for passengers, overboarding also results in vehicle breakdowns. Especially in electric vehicles, the batteries run the risk of not being able to pull an overloaded vehicle.

In what comes as a welcoming news, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited has revealed of its plans of equipping its electric buses with overload indicators, specifically to prevent breakdowns. The indicators will immediately alert the driver and conductor once the maximum passenger capacity has been reached.

As of now, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has a fleet of 75 e-buses. As per news, officials have asked private players, who run these buses, to install overload indicators in all the existing and new buses.

A fleet of about 550 new electric buses are expected to joind PMPML's existing fleet by October and another 440 by December. The load factor of a 9-meter-long bus is 31, including the driver. The same for a 12-meter-long bus is 35 passengers, a wheelchair and driver. The RTO permits an additional 40% load as standing capacity. So, a 9-meter-long bus can accommodate 70 passengers, while a 12-meter-long bus can accommodate around 105 passengers.
